Walter E. Washington Convention Center

SITUATION

  • Events DC selected PAX Services Group to complete roofing improvements at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The approximately 800,000-square-foot project spanned 96 roof sections with different configurations and installation requirements.

  • Most areas required a roof recover system, while the steep south barrel roof and mechanical roof needed specialized approaches. The project called for coordinated planning across these scopes to meet Events DC’s requirements and completion schedule.

CHALLENGES

  • The size and complexity of the facility required careful coordination of materials, crews, and equipment across 96 roof sections. Different roof configurations demanded installation methods suited to each area.

  • The steep south barrel roof presented access and installation challenges that required specialized methods and crane operations. The mechanical roof required full removal of the existing roofing down to the concrete deck, followed by installation of a new vapor barrier and insulation system.

  • Managing these scopes within one project required consistent scheduling and logistics to maintain progress and meet the client’s requirements.

SOLUTIONS AND RESULTS

  • PAX installed a roof recover system across most of the facility, incorporating new insulation, cover boards, and an 80-mil PVC membrane. The team used specialized installation methods and crane operations for the south barrel roof and completed full replacement of the mechanical roof system.

  • Managing the work under a single purchase order helped PAX secure favorable manufacturer pricing, coordinate logistics, and maintain consistent crews throughout construction.

  • The team completed the project on time and in compliance with Events DC’s requirements. The completed work delivered coordinated roofing improvements across a large, complex facility, demonstrating PAX’s ability to manage varied installation needs within one comprehensive project.
